Jack Reed
U.S. Senator from Rhode Island
John Francis “Jack” Reed was born in November 1945 in Cranston, Rhode Island. He graduated from La Salle Academy and the United States Military Academy at West Point. After graduating, he spent several years in active duty military service. He earned the Ranger Tab and was a paratrooper. He earned a Master of Public Policy from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, then returned to West Point as an associate professor in the Department of Social Sciences.
He left active duty after attaining the rank of captain. He then served in the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as major. After leaving active duty, Reed earned a Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School. He entered private practice, first in Washington, D.C., then returning to Rhode Island.
He was elected as a state senator and served three terms. Reed was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving six years. He has been a member of the United States Senate since assuming office in January 1997.
He is married to Julia Hart and they have one daughter. He is a Roman Catholic.

Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island called the potential of a government default a “manufactured crisis.”
He stated that, under President Trump, Congress had increased the debt ceiling “because we understood the risk of the economy, the risk of the American people, the risk of our national security standing.” Senator Reed continued, “This is completely avoidable.”
Senator Reed added that all that had to be done was to “pass a clean debt ceiling and then sit down and negotiate a budget and put everything on the table there.”
He called having a debt ceiling increase accompanied by wide spending cuts “reckless.“
